ABOUT GARVAN WOODLAND GARDENS Verna Cook Garvan donated the 210-acre Garvan Woodland Gardens to the University of Arkansas School of Architecture in 1985. Located on 4.5 miles of wooded shoreline along Lake Hamilton near Hot Springs, the gardens feature more than 128 species of ornamental and native shrubs and wild flowers, 160 different types of azaleas, a 4-acre Asian garden with a 12-foot waterfall, three unique bridges, the Perry Wildflower Overlook, and the sandstone and redwood Garvan Pavilion, designed by Fay Jones and Maurice Jennings. Anthony Chapel, designed by Jennings and David McKee, is a popular wedding venue. The Evans Children’s Adventure Gardens offers 1.5 acres of interactive fun with a waterfall and cave, an iron bridge that resembles woven tree branches and rocks weighing more than 3,200 tons. The annual Holiday Lights display – featuring 5 million lights over 18 acres – draws thousands of visitors each winter. The outdoor paradise that is Hot Springs, Arkansas is home to the best lakes and outdoor trails in the state. Situated in the midst of the Ouachita Mountains, one may say it is an Elysium.

Here are some things to do and places to do for the outdoor enthusiast:

Lakes

Lake Catherine – known for its fishing opportunities, the lake is home to various species of fish including bass, catfish, walleye, bream, and crappie. Rainbow trout can also be fished below the dam.

Lake Ouachita –Arkansas’s largest lake and one of the cleanest lakes in the country. Marinas, resorts, and cabins border the lake where fishing, boating, fishing, and a plethora of water sports are popular.

Lake Hamilton – one of Arkansas’s most popular lakes. Lake Hamilton is home to many resorts, condominiums, and homes. The National Park Duck Tours and the Belle of Hot Springs riverboat both operate in the lake. The Garvan Woodland Gardens is one of the more popular attractions on this lake, located on a 210-acre peninsula on the lake and is accessible by boat. Tubing, skiing, water skiing, fishing, and boating round out the activities on Lake Hamilton.
