Art Attack in August at the Garvan Woodland Gardens

August is art month at the Garvan Woodland Gardens with a series of art exhibits and workshops already in line for the entire month. Take a tour around the 210-acre garden and drop by the various art exhibits at the Magnolia Room.

The World Around Us

Hot Springs Village artists Shirley Anderson, Barbara Seibel, and Caryl Joy Young collaborate on an exhibit that interprets the feelings of all three artists in a vivid expression of color and emotion through different mediums such as oil, pastel, and watercolor.

Shirley Anderson was recently elected to the Board of the International Association of Pastel Societies and serves as the Exhibition Chair. Her passion in plein air painting (painting outdoors) has brought her to various countries across the world and she annually flies to California to join other plein air enthusiasts. Shirley performs demonstrations for art groups and teaches workshops in the Central Arkansas area.

Barbara Seibel began painting at the age of eight when she took her first art lessons. She later operated art schools in Kentucky and North Carolina. She has won numerous rewards for her watercolor skills. She teaches plenty of art workshops within the region and abroad, aboard luxury cruise ships and has travelled to the Amazon, South Africa, Iceland, Thailand, and Singapore.

Caryl Joy Young became passionate in painting after a visit to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. and standing in front of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. She has taken classes from nationally-recognized pastel and oil painters and was invited to participate in the Garvan Woodland Gardens’ Beauty and the Brush. She now has several artworks hanging in the Artists’ Workshop Gallery in downtown Hot Springs.

Mosaic-Making Workshop

Garvan staff member and local artist Suzie Burch is back by popular demand with a two-day creative workshop. Participants will have a chance to design and create mosaic garden-planter art pieces. These art pieces can be made by cycling materials often found at flea markets or the neighborhood yard sale. All materials will be provided but students are also encouraged to bring old trinkets, stones, and other pieces that people may consider as junk that can be used to be included in the finished piece of art.

This will be a two-day event. Participants will be designing and placing pieces on the first day and the finished product will be grouted and cured on the second day. Bring a lunch or you can order from the Chipmunk Café.

Schedule:        August 21 – August 22, 2018              10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
