Oaklawn Racing and Gaming

The world-class Oaklawn Racing and Gaming has consistently been one of the premier thoroughbred horse racing tracks in the country since it began its operations in 1904. It annually hosts the prestigious Racing Festival of the South every last week of April and is home to the $1 Million Arkansas Derby. Early Years On February 24, 1905, Oaklawn Park opened its doors to more than 3,000 attendees to witness the inaugural race. It was named after the rural community in which it was built, which originally stood among ancient oaks.At the time, it was one of only four thoroughbred racetracks around the area. There was Sportsman’s Park, which operated in the late 1890s, Essex Park, which opened on Malvern Road in 1904, and one at Little Rock, Arkansas, 50 miles northeast of Hot Springs. During its conception, its founders John Condon and Dan Stuart commissioned the services of renowned Chicago architect Zachary Taylor Davis to design Oaklawn’s glass-enclosed grandstand. Arlington Hotel

The Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa is not only a premier hotel located at Hot Springs, Arkansas but also a part of the city’s history. Its Spanish-Colonial Revival style architecture, along with its enormous stature and placement at the city’s nucleus has made it a key historical landmark at Hot Springs. The Arlington Hotel you see today marks the third era of the hotel’s colorful history. First and Second Arlington Hotel The first Arlington Hotel was the first luxury hotel in the Hot Springs area. Its construction was financed by three entrepreneurs. It was made of wood, which had 120 guest rooms ready for accommodation, making it the largest in the state. It opened its doors in 1875. An additional 100 rooms and a new dining room were added in the late 1880s. It operated for 18 years until it was razed to make room for a new 300-room Spanish renaissance structure in 1893. Ouachita Mountains

The Ouachita Mountains (referred to as The Ouachitas) are a mountain range located at West –Central Arkansas and Southeastern Oklahoma, which houses the Ouachita National Park. It is one of the six natural divisions of Arkansas and is characterized by its folded ridges and valleys formed by Paleozoic Rocks. It is generally considered as a unique mountain range as it runs from east to west, in contrast with the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains that run from north to south. The southern slopes are covered with pine forests and woodlands while the northern slopes are covered with diverse hardwood forests because of the cooler and moister conditions. Al Capone

Al Capone was born in 1899 to poor Italian immigrants in Brooklyn, New York. He rose to infamy in 1920 during the height of Prohibition with his illegal business in bootlegging, prostitution, and gambling. He frequented the Hot Springs area during the prohibition era to strike deals with bootleggers during the city’s own gangster era to stock his clubs in Chicago with alcohol. Hot Springs provided a strategic location for Capone due to its location in the middle of the Ouachita Mountains and the pine trees provided cover for the moonshine stills. He would then ship his bootleg liquor in tanker railroad cars, which had the words “Mountain Valley Water” on the side for protection. Capone’s favorite abode during his trips to Hot Springs was the Arlington Hotel. He always stayed at room 442 and would rent the entire floor for his bodyguards and staff members. He would pamper himself and his staff with the hot mineral baths and massage parlors spread across the town. Lake Ouachita

Lake Ouachita is the largest lake in Arkansas. It was created through the creation of the Blakely Mountain Dam in 1952 to provide hydroelectric power to the State of Arkansas. The word Ouachita comes from the French spelling of the Indian word “Washita” that means “big hunt” or “good hunting grounds”. It has over 40,000 acres of water and an astounding 975 miles of shoreline surrounding the lake and is completely surrounded by Ouachita National Forest and is located 13 miles northwest of the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Natural Features The man-made Ouachita Lake naturally abounds with various natural resources. It features one of the largest crystal veins in the world, comprised mainly of quartz. This area has been highly prized and is eagerly sought by various mineral collectors, rockhounders , as well as the general public. Garvan Woodland Gardens

Situated on the shoreline of Lake Hamilton is the beautiful Garvan Woodland Gardens. It is a beautiful 210-acre botanical garden that is also a department of the School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas that encompasses four and a half miles of the shoreline of the lake. It operates as a non-profit organization wherein its mission is for it to be “a resource for people desiring to improve their aesthetic, cultural, and scientific knowledge of plants, gardening, architecture, and landscape architecture, within a woodland environment.” History Malvern businessman Arthur Cook purchased the land in the 1920s in order to harvest the timber to provide timber for his mill. The company, Wisconsin-Arkansas Lumber, manufactured hardwood flooring. The land was transformed into a large peninsula when Arkansas Power & Light (AP&L, now Entergy) constructed Carpenter Dam that created Lake Hamilton. His wife and two daughters acquired the land, along with his other two businesses Winsconsin-Arkansas Lumber and Malvern Brick and Tile Company, when Cook tragically died in a car accident in 1934. Arkansas Career Training Institute

Establishment of the former Army-Navy Hospital The Army-Navy Hospital was an economic and social boon for the state of Arkansas when it was founded. It was the first hospital to have combined facilities for both U.S. Army and Navy patients. It was created due to the high demand for the use of the therapeutic mineral waters of Hot Springs, Arkansas and was ahead of the Navy Hospital Corp and the now-infamous Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The foundation for the hospital was proposed at a dinner party hosted by former Confederate Army surgeon Dr. A. S. Garnett on the second floor of the Palace Bathhouse in Hot Springs in 1882. It was given in honor of U.S. Senator John A. Logan, a former Yankee general who had served with distinction on General Ulysses S. Grant’s staff. The senator, who was impressed by the town’s mineral waters, vowed to introduce legislation upon his return to Washington D.C. to appropriate the land due to its “ideal location for an institution of this character”. The Garland County Historical Society

The Garland County Historical Society through the Years The Garland County Historical Society is an organization that was founded to preserve and provides access to the local history of Garland County, Arkansas, to educate, as to encourage more interest to Hot Springs and Garland County, as a whole. It was established on April 19, 1960, by its first set of Officers John Connelly, Mary D. Hudgins, Capitola Glazner, Dr. F. J. Scully, Sam Sargo, Nathan Schoenfeld, and Katherine Creason and had 58 charter members. On the same year of its founding, it published the first volume of its quarterly publication, The Record. Since then, it has become an annual publication and has won numerous awards from the Arkansas Historical Association under the leadership of its successive editors Inez Cline, Wendy Richter, Bobbie Jones McLane, Isabel Anthony, and Elizabeth Robbins. Serving as the first editor for The Record, Inez Cline’s gathered historical materials and research proved to be invaluable to Garland County and its heritage and has served as a basis for the society’s collections. Entergy and the Dams of Hot Springs

Lake Catherine Lake Catherine is a small 1,940-acre lake nestled in the Ouachita Mountains. It is one of the five popular Diamond Lakes located in West-Central Arkansas near the city of Hot Springs. It was created in 1924 with the construction of the Remmel Dam on the Ouachita River. The Remmel Dam was constructed by Arkansas Power & Light (AP&L), now known as Entergy, to provide more power to the state in anticipation of the growing demand for electricity after World War I. Flavius Josephus Carpenter, a riverboat captain, met with the founder of AP&L Harvey Couch to discuss the possibility of building dams on the Ouachita River for hydroelectric power. An increasing demand for electricity was foreseen by Couch and sought to anticipate it with the construction of a dam. He went to Washington DC to secure a license for construction. A chance encounter in a hotel lobby with his friend Colonel Harmon L. Remmel, after whom the dam was named, proved to be monumental as it led to the approval of his license for construction. Bill Clinton, The Native Son of Hot Springs

William Jefferson Clinton is known as the 42nd president of the United States of America from 1993 to 2001. He sought to end racial discrimination, improve education, and strengthen environmental rules during his stint in The White House. But “Bill” Clinton will always be known to Arkansas natives as Hot Springs own native son. He lived in the town of Hot Springs, Arkansas from 1953 to 1964. He credits his Hot Springs education to have been the source of his interest in studying law and running for public office. Bill’s Childhood Years On August 19, 1946, at the Julia Chester Hospital in the small town of Hope, Arkansas, Bill was born as William Jefferson Blythe III. He was named after his late father who had died in a car crash three months prior to his birth. His mother, Virginia Dell Cassidy, studied nursing and received her certification in Shreveport, Louisiana where she met his father, William Jefferson Blythe II, a traveling salesman from Sherman, Texas. Boys Baseball The Lake Hamilton Baseball team is composed of 18 young individuals on the team, which is made up of 9 sophomores, 6 juniors, and 3 seniors. The team is coached by Coach Mac Hurley with Seth Reeves and Andrew Williams serving as assistant coaches. The Lake Hamilton Baseball Team is currently playing in the 5A/6A District 6 Baseball Tournament and currently stands with a 1-8-1 record. For the first game of the season, the Wolves tied Magnet Cove 0-0. They shared some disappointments with a 2-game skid after falling to Camden Fairview (1-3) and Lakeside (2-6) before bouncing back with 8-7 win over the Harmony Grove Cardinals and improved to 1-2-1 for the season. They suffered their worst loss of the season against the Malvern Leopards 2-13. They continued their 5-game skid after losing for consecutive games to Jacksonville 6-9 and 2-1, Robinson 1-11, El Dorado 2-6, and 9-14. Hot Springs Hosts Historic Baseball Weekend

Hot Springs will be hosting the inaugural Hot Springs Baseball Weekend on March 23 and 24 to celebrate the Spa City’s role as the birthplace of Major League Baseball spring training and its completion of the internationally famous Historic Baseball Trail. The event will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of Babe Ruth’s historic 500-foot home run during spring training at Whittington Park. Joining in on the celebration will be the descendants of baseball immortal Babe Ruth and Major League legends Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins and Al “The Mad Hungarian” Hrabosky. Both legends will be participating in a panel discussion about playing in the Major Leagues, according to a release by Visit Hot Springs. “We will be joined at this celebration by three generations of the Babe Ruth family, including his grandson Tom Stevens, great grandson Brent Stevens, and the Babe’s great great granddaughters,” said Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs. “Babe Ruth’s daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens, was invited but will be unable to attend. The World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Once again St. Patrick’s Day is upon us and with it is the annual World’s First Shortest St. Patrick’s Day parade. People from all over the country are once again flocking to the 98 foot Bridge Street, the shortest street in the world in everyday use, where the parade is held every year. This year marks the 15th year of the parade since it was founded in 2003 and will mark many firsts for the event. The world’s biggest inflatable Irish pub debuts on the same day of the parade and will be serving plenty of drinks for those enjoying the festivities. Lake Hamilton Fun Facts

Lake Hamilton is a 7,460-acre man-made lake located South of Hot Springs, Arkansas. It is one of three man-made lakes along the Ouachita River. It was created following the completion of the Carpenter Dam in 1932. Lake Hamilton is named after Hamilton Moses, then soon-to-be President and Chairman of the Board for Arkansas Power and Light. Fun Facts Lake Hamilton is Arkansas’ most popular site for recreation and residence. Virginia Clinton Kelley, the mother of President Bill Clinton, resided in Lake Hamilton until her death in 1994. The shoreline of Lake Hamilton is populated by several resorts, restaurants, and hotels. The lake is one of Arkansas’ most productive fisheries as it is home to numerous species of fish including largemouth bass, striped bass, hybrid striped bass, and crappie. The Arkansas State record for striped bass was broken twice in March 1997 with a 53lb 9oz striper followed by a 53lb 13oz striper. The record has since been broken. 2018 Oaklawn Racing Festival of the South

And the race is on! Oaklawn is bringing back the annual Racing Festival of the South for another year. The races begin April 12 with the $150,000 Bachelor Stakes and will continue through Saturday, April 14, when it culminates with the $1 Million Arkansas Derby. Participating in the races Oaklawn’s annual stakes bonanza will be Champion Unique Bella, the unbeaten Magnum Moon, and Grade 1 winner Accelerate. Unique Bella, the country’s champion female sprinter of 2017, is scheduled to run in Friday’s $700,000 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) for older fillies and mares. She is based in Southern California with Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and has won 7 of 9 starts overall, including the $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes (G2) last Feb. 10 at Santa Anita. Post positions for the Apple Blossom Handicap will be drawn on Tuesday while post positions for the Arkansas Derby and Oaklawn Handicap will be drawn Wednesday. June 4-17, 2017 was indeed very memorable as it gave us Season 22 of the prestigious Hot Springs Music Festival, an annual gathering of various international professional and pre-professional musicians to delight audiences with various classical musical arrangements. Season 23 can’t come soon enough. Slated on the 3rd to the 16th of June, the upcoming season features the likes of Principal Conductor Stefan Sanders with music from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Star Wars and many more. The National Park College is Hot Springs’ is the fourth largest community college in Arkansas. It was formerly known as the National Park Community College, and before that, existed as two schools, namely the Garland County Community College and the Quapaw Technical Institute, which had been established in 1973 and 1969, respectively. Both schools merged in 2003. Formation In 1969, a branch of the Ouachita Vocational Technical School (now College of the Ouachitas) was established in Hot Springs. It was named the Quapaw Vocational Technical School. Act 310 was proposed and approved in 1973, proclaiming that Quapaw Vocational Technical School to be a separate entity from the Ouachita Vocational Technical Institute. Then as a result of Acts 773 and 1244 in 1991, the OVTI was renamed to the Quapaw Technical Institute. Separately, the Garland County Community College was established as a two-year institution of higher learning in 1973 as a means to provide higher education to students living in Garland County and its surrounding areas. The 7th Annual Hot Springs Fishing Challenge

Last year, the Hot Springs Fishing Challenge was a complete success. This year, it’s going to be even bigger. It’s Hot Springs Fishing Challenge season once again. This year marks the 7th year of the event since its conception back in 2011. But this year’s event promises to be an even bigger success as the total prize money is about to be increased. “We’re increasing the number of tagged prize fish this year in celebration of the catching of Big Al, our $15,000 top-prize fish, during last year’s Challenge,” said Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs. “And we’re increasing the total amount of prize money from $86,000 to $101,000. It’s going to be a great Challenge for 2018.” As part of this year’s big celebration, a total of seventy-one fish will be tagged and released at secret locations on Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine by the Andrew Hulsey Fish Hatchery. This weekend will surely be the most furious weekend you’re ever going to have as the Central Arkansas Corvette Club, a non-profit club, brings us the 20th Annual Hot Springs Corvette Weekend. They grow fast if they’re sprouted from seeds, but they grow even faster if they’re grown from transplants. Bed Preparation and Planting Before you begin planting, be sure to prepare the beds or pots that you’ll be planting in. Begin preparations by adding three to four inches of various organic matter, such as dried leaves, compost, manure, or humus, together with some sand if the soil seems too heavy. It’s Fun for the Whole Family this Free Fishing Weekend

Anglers of all ages are in for a treat this weekend as the Hot Springs Fishing Challenge brings us its Free Fishing Weekend at Lakes Catherine and Hamilton. State fish hatcheries, including the Andrew H. Hulsey State Fish Hatchery, will also be offering special derbies for anglers up to 15 years old. The local derby will take place from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday. Adult supervision is required. There will be imposed limits such as one rod and reel/cane per child and three fish per child. There will also be a casting contest, an archery range, a BB gun range, and fishing on a stocked pond. Prizes will be awarded and drawings will be held throughout the derby. Free Fishing Weekend runs from Friday through Sunday. The Steuart Pennington’s Tub Race Draws Record Crowds

A record crowd turned out in downtown Hot Springs to witness the 13th Annual Steuart Pennington’s World Championship Running of the Tubs on Saturday morning according to the event’s organizers. Dripping wet Oompa-Loompas, Mario Brothers, and a wide variety of other cosplaying members and spectators all joined in on the wet fun as various odd charters race in their bathtubs down Central Avenue. Participating in the event are various teams composed of local businesses, law enforcement agencies, civic organizations, and churches with remastered tubs as their vehicle of choice along Central Avenue the length of Bathhouse Row. The race will begin at the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa. The 18 teams that participated in this year’s race included the returning Austin Weirdos, an out-of-state group from Austin Texas, who was also cheered on by crowds carrying coolers of water balloons and Super Soakers. Hot Springs Board Approves Water Tank Contract

The 3 million-gallon composite elevated water tank project has finally pushed through on Tuesday as the Hot Springs Board of Directors awarded Chicago Bridge & Iron LLC, Ga. a $4,647,000 contract for its construction. The city now moves closer to its goal of increasing the regional water system’s usable storage by almost 50 percent. Crist Engineers, the city’s water system consultant, recommended CB&I’s bid, which outbid Landmark Structures of Fort Worth, Texas, $4,890,000, and Caldwell Tanks Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky, $4,892,000. Alternate bids for a 2.5 million-gallon tank, $4,141,000 and a 2 million-gallon tank, $3,723,300, were also submitted. Bid information indicates that $2,134,000 for the 3 million-gallon steel tank and $730,000 for the concrete support pedestal are the two costliest project components. Proceeds from an uncommitted balance from a 2015 debt issue amounting to $3,694,000, will be used to fund the project and can already be drawn, as stated by the city’s financial adviser. According to project manager Todd Piller, the 190-foot-tall tank will take about 18 months to construct and will be the city’s first composite tank. Winner’s Circle, 3 Additional Barns to Be Added to Oaklawn Park

The track officials of Oaklawn Park has announced that winning horses will be returning to a new winner’s circle near the grandstand, which marks the first time this will be happening in 115 years. The announcement was made in Oaklawn’s June newsletter. Winners of stakes races will continue to go to the infield’s winner’s circle. According to the park’s media relations manager Jennifer Hoyt, the project will involve the digging up of a portion in the north apron of the grandstand. The winner’s circle will be for everyday use while the current winner’s circle in the infield will still serve as a gathering place for larger stakes races. Additionally, Hoyt said that the winner’s circle will “allow the fans a chance to get closer to the winners after each race and groups can now enjoy the excitement of going to the winner’s circle without having to walk through mud on rainy days.” Oaklawn has built five new barns on the backstretch in the last three years and three new barns will open by 2019. New Rules for City Buses Proposed

The 2002 code of conduct for bus patrons will be getting an update as Hot Springs Intracity Transit has proposed an updated code of conduct, which will flesh out the old code to include offenses that warrant suspension of bus privileges. Kathleen Lambert, Transit Director of First Transit LLC, the company the city contracts to run the bus system, said that the passenger experience will be improved by making the code more comprehensive. The Transportation Advisory Committee will convene at noon on July 9 at the Transportation Depot to discuss the changes and to receive public comments. The new code, however, can only be put into effect when the Hot Springs Board of Directors takes action according to Lambert. “From the passenger’s perspective, we’re all trying to get to where we need to go without a lot of fuss,” said Lambert. “If people understand what their options are, we feel like it makes a better environment for all of our riders.” Lambert said passenger and staff input shaped the proposed code, with much of the staff contributions relying on past interactions with passengers. American Idol runner-up and alum Lauren Alaina is coming to Magic Springs Theme and Water Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The country star is set to perform at the Timberwood Amphitheater on Saturday, August 4 at 8 PM. The 23-year-old Alaina will be performing as part of the Magic Springs and Crystal Falls 2018 Concert Series.
